Capacity Building Training in Nimba County, Liberia West Africa
The training brought together Ganta City Mayor, Women groups, Youth Organizations, Motorcyclists, Students, and other key Stakeholders in Gompa/Ganta, Nimba County.
Meanwhile, the training is part of series of actions including; Supporting Women Empowerment Forum to facilitate Women’s Transformative Leadership in practice through conflict resolution, peace building and documentation of case(s) mediated at local levels, Dialogue, Advocacy and Networking by influencing activities led by women groups, and training of Women and CSOs to Monitor and Report on VAWIE/P during the 2023 General Presidential and Legislative Elections under the project title “Transformative Leadership and Community Engagement for women’s Political Participation” sponsored by the Irish Aid through UN Women Liberia.
As you may be aware, Liberia is headed to a very critical General Presidential and Legislative Elections on October 10,2023 and there is a need for many of these dialogues to inform all about their roles and responsibilities said one of the Stakeholders at the opening of the event in Gompa.
WONGOSOL Program Manager Willet L. Salue, explain that the overall objective of the project is to ensure that women are fully and equally represented in leadership and decision making at the same time women and girls should benefit from gender-responsive governance.
According to her, inclusive participation should be at every level where women can exercise their rights freely, openly and transparently without any forms of barriers or obstacles that could hinder their participation in any process(es).
She noted that WONGOSOL will be delighted to see women occupying positions at local government levels such as town chiefs, clan chiefs, paramount chiefs, commissioners and superintendents. That is one of the reasons why this project is empowering women at the local level through the Peace Huts and other women associations to work closely and have discussions with traditional leaders and county authorities.
Miss Salue further explained that some key things under the project are the need for women to build stronger relationships in their respective communities in order to prevent conflicts especially during electioneering period and creating massive awareness on violence against women before and even after elections.
As part of the activities, Zontuo, Nimba County Electoral District Seven was a seen of great interaction when WONGOSOL ended her week-long training with the Peace Building component in Nimba County. Stakeholders and many women groups attending the training were extremely thankful to WONGOSOL because, this was coming at the time wherein, they are just few months away from elections and from many credible sources, Nimba District Seven needs more of these trainings as the political tensions backed by what is yet to come confirmed as tribal politics is at play grows with political sentiments.
Miss Salue informed the gathering that WONGOSOL is implementing the project in five counties which includes, Nimba, Bomi, Lofa, Grand Gedeh and Grand Bassa respectively.
She ended by urging all the participants to work and make sure that they can put aside their differences in order to keep the pending elections peaceful Mrs. Salue disclosed.
Participants of the training thanked WONGOSOL for the training and assured them of taking the messages to their different sectors and communities as Ambassadors.
