For illegal Mining in Pleebo Sodoken District#2 Maryland County, Chinese Nationals Face Police Investigation

Maryland, Liberia: – A Chinese owned gold mining company Sward Incorporated, operating in Grand kru and River Gee counties in Southeastern Liberia, is currently under investigation by the Liberia National Police (LNP) Pleebo detachment for their reported involvement in illegal mining activities in the county.

The Chinese Nationals  were discovered by some residents of Pleebo early  Saturday  morning  February 24,2024 at the Chinese   camp  area in zone nine community allegedly carrying on illicit mining.

The residents  disclosed to  reporters  that the sound  of the working  equipment  was always heard at night time  when  everyone  in the  area is in bed.  They furthered noted that this happened two nights ago when everyone in the community was in bed something which they said   was scaring and prompted them to visit the site  to inquire from the company.

The situation  has  raised  serious  eyebrows among  inhabitants in Pleebo leading  to  hundred  of citizens gathering  at the main compound of the  Chinese camp  demanding the  immediate removal of  their machines and  other working equipments including the  camp from the area.

Citizens speaking to Nimba D-9 TV at the grounds of the Chinese Camp in Gebio over the weekend, some citizens  believe that removing the  camp from  the area,and all  other  related  working  equipment belonging  to the company might eliminate illegal mining for reoccurring and might safe the land from future embarrassment.

During  a preliminary investigation  at the compound of the  company,local authorities  represented by former  Pleebo  Mayor Hon. Wellington Keyne,Liberia National Police (LNP) headed  by the  head of Criminal  Investigation Department Jimmy Kaydor, Mines and  Energy  represented by  Alex Abu Freeman and others including a team of journalist,  the company  Manager Romeo Leo, told the gathering  that  the company has no intention of carrying on illicit mining around the compound, as it’s  been  spiculated  in the community,but rather  was a testing  samples of the rocks and grobles collected  from  Grand kru and other counties.

Explaining further, the Manager informed the Liberia National Police (LNP) recommending to the gathering that the issue be transferred to Pleebo Police station for proper investigation
