Saclepea, Nimba County, Liberia – In a remarkable display of community solidarity and commitment to sustainable development, the United Nimba Citizens Council (UNICCO) Houston, Texas Chapter, has made a generous donation of essential supplies to the Johnny Voker High School and the Hard of Hearing School in Saclepea, located in Nimba County’s Electoral District Seven, Liberia West Africa.
This act of goodwill highlights the power of grassroots initiatives in advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to quality education, reducing inequalities, and fostering global partnerships.
UNICCO: A Catalyst for Community Transformation
Established in 1979, UNICCO is a U.S.-based Liberian ethnic association comprising descendants of Nimba County. The organization’s mission is to foster unity, understanding, and progress among Nimbaians in the diaspora and Liberia. Through various chapters across the United States, UNICCO has been instrumental in implementing impactful projects that align with the core objectives of the SDGs.

Advancing Quality Education (SDG 4)
Education remains a cornerstone for sustainable development, and UNICCO has demonstrated unwavering dedication to this sector. A notable example is the commitment of former UNICCO Vice President Madame Elaine Blanton, who has been sponsoring scholarships for 10 (ten) underprivileged students in Glarlay Old Town since July 2020. Her efforts have enabled ten (10) predominantly female students to access education they might otherwise have been denied. This initiative enhances literacy rates and empowers young girls, aligning seamlessly with SDG 4’s objectives.

Reducing Inequalities (SDG 10)
UNICCO’s projects strategically address social disparities and bridge societal gaps. The organization’s flagship initiative, the “UNICCO December to Remember” event, was launched in December 2019 under the leadership of then-president Dahn K. Dennis. This biennial homecoming event encourages diaspora Nimbaians to return home, stimulating economic growth and fostering cultural exchange. The event has led to significant projects, including the acquisition of land and the ongoing construction of a US$250,000 Women’s Empowerment Center in Domahpa and the establishment of UNICCO Park in Tappita. These projects, when completed and dedicated, will provide women and youth with access to training and opportunities, thereby reducing systemic inequalities. The current President of UNICCO, Mr. Samuel Wogbeh Gee, and his team are pushing from all angles to see these projects fully completed in time and dedicated, which is a sign of an impactful leadership with vision.

Building Global Partnerships for Sustainable Goals (SDG 17)
UNICCO exemplifies the power of global partnerships in driving sustainable development. By leveraging resources and expertise from Nimbaians in the diaspora, the organization has mobilized support for various community projects. Collaborations between UNICCO chapters, local communities, and international donors have resulted in impactful initiatives, such as the ongoing construction of the Women’s Empowerment Center and the provision of educational scholarships. These partnerships underscore SDG 17’s essence, demonstrating how collective efforts can yield meaningful progress.
A Legacy of Impact and Unity
Beyond project implementation, UNICCO has played a crucial role in fostering peace, reconciliation, and unity among Liberians. The organization actively participated in peace talks during Liberia’s civil unrest and has consistently supported community development projects. The recent donation of school supplies to Johnny Voker High School and the Hard of Hearing School in Saclepea is a continuation of this legacy, reaffirming UNICCO’s steadfast commitment to uplifting Nimba County and its residents.
UNICCO’s grassroots initiatives serve as a compelling model of how community-driven efforts can effectively contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Through unwavering dedication, strategic partnerships, and a profound sense of responsibility, UNICCO continues to transform challenges into opportunities, paving the way for a more equitable and prosperous future for Nimba County and beyond.
