Grand Gedeh Welcomes Historic UN 79th Anniversary Celebration and New UN Hub Launch

Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County – On October 23 and 24, 2024, Grand Gedeh County was filled with joy as it hosted the United Nations’ 79th Anniversary Celebration and inaugurated a new UN Hub in the southern region of Liberia, specifically in Zwedru. This marks the first time the UN has celebrated its anniversary in southeastern Liberia, adding a momentous chapter to the region’s history.

Led by Superintendent Alex C. Grant, local authorities expressed enthusiasm for the visit of Dr. Jarso Jallah, Minister of Education, representing President Joseph Nyumah Boakai Sr., along with Hon. F. Sakila Nyumalin, Minister of Internal Affairs, and Ms. Christine N. Umutoni, the UN Resident Coordinator for Liberia. Together, they honored UN Day in Zwedru.

The people of Grand Gedeh highlighted their rich culture in a vibrant welcome ceremony, underscoring the importance of the UN Hub’s establishment and the anniversary celebration as a testament to President Boakai’s commitment to decentralization.

The event was attended by local officials, traditional leaders, students, school administrators, youth and women’s groups, civil society organizations, UN agency leaders, and media representatives.

Following the celebrations, UN Resident Coordinator Ms. Christine N. Umutoni pledged to partner with county officials to promote growth and development in Grand Gedeh County and Liberia.
