Paynesville, Liberia: Maternal morbidity, defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as “any health condition attributed to and/or complicating pregnancy, and childbirth that hurts the woman’s well-being and/or functioning,”
This situation claimed the life of Amelia N. Duo on July 14, 2024, at JDJ Hospital in Paynesville, Monrovia.
Amelia passed away four days after giving birth to her daughter, Amelia D. Kpor, on July 10, 2024.
Maternal morbidity remains a significant issue in Liberia, despite efforts by the government and the Ministry of Health to address this tragic occurrence. According to statistics, the maternal death rate in Liberia declined to 8.63 deaths per 1,000 inhabitants in 2022.
