Karyee, Nimba, County, Liberia: – Rancy Linka believed to be 44 has allegedly drugged and rape 15 years old in Karyee Nimba County. Karyee is one of the towns in Zehnla Administrative Districts, Nimba County Electoral District Nine that is said to be a gold deposit community with many miners from different communities and counties who are mining gold.
“A man only identified as Sakou, who is said to be one of the Miners in Karyee was dubbing his house and he provided a drugged liquor for these teenagers and Rancy was one of those who was a part of the process. The 15 years old is said to have drank some of the drugged liquor and was later rape. We saw her naked, muddy and lying in her vomit early on Monday morning. We immediately reported the situation to the Zekepa Magistrate Court. Karyee needs to be a place of concern as many different people are trooping in daily. Drugs is said to be on the increase as well in Karyee. We are very concern” said a motorcyclist who doesn’t want to be named
Women Empowerment Forum Liberia-WEFL, a female advocate and rights group with support from EU/UN Spotlight Initiative that is working in Nimba County Electoral District Nine continue to work with stakeholders in addressing this and other abuse against women and girls across the district. They have logged and transported the victim and perpetrator to the Saclepea Comprehensive Health Center that is one of the One Stop Shops from all rape issues in Lower Nimba County.
Remember Rape is very dangerous because, Survivors of rape are more likely to attempt or commit suicide. The association remains, even after controlling for sex, age, education, symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and the presence of psychiatric disorders. The experience of being raped can lead to suicidal behavior as early as adolescence.
Madame Laura Bee Kiekpo, Founder/Executive Director of WEFL speaking to this paper said, though the funding is not much in fighting rape across Nimba County Electoral District Nine, but she and her team will continue to work in helping to minimize rape and other harmful practices against women and girls.
“This is the second time for a rape issue to be reported from Karyee. The first case was when a man rapes a girl with Epilepsy and that case was reported to the One Stop Shop in Saclepea as the preparator is now in jailed at the Sanniquellie Prison facility awaiting trial”.
She furthered stressed that, they will continue to create more awareness about the danger of rape and all forms of abuse against women and girls. She also praised the stakeholders of the district including citizens for always standing up in reporting rape and other abuse against women and girls.
To have this program sustain, a women group under the banner: Yarwin Mehnsonnoh Women United for Peace and Development has been established to track and report all Sexual Gender Based Violence Cases. A village saving loan has been founded in making sure that women are fully a part of the process in fighting rape and other harmful traditional practices against women and girls.
