Beinghana in Mourning: Search Ongoing After 12th-Grade Student Drowns in St. John River

Beinghana, Nimba County, Liberia: – Beinghana, a quiet town in Mehnsonnoh Administrative District, Nimba County, Electoral District 9, has been thrown into deep sorrow following a heartbreaking tragedy over the weekend. A 24-year-old Jefferson Jackson, who was also a 12th-grade student, went missing after drowning in the St. John River, and the search for his body is still ongoing.

Speaking to The One Nimba House Media Inc, Nimba D-9 TV, resident and local lifesaver Konah Peter explained:

“We recently replaced the old ferry cable, and many young people from Zekepa joined us in Beinghana to ensure the work was done safely and successfully. The following day, I received a call from The Gwaikolo Ferry Management Inc., the group responsible for the day-to-day activities of the ferry, informing me that, due to ongoing flooding, a log had gotten stuck on the ferry. I immediately took my life jacket and went to assist. That’s when we learned that our dear son and two others, who had joined their uncle Caleb Zarway, who is engaged in a rubber business, had gone to remove the log. Unfortunately, one of them, Jefferson Jackson, went missing.”

Mr. Peter described the incident as devastating, stressing that ferry operators were already available to respond to such emergencies.

“He wasn’t asked as been said by some people, to help remove the log, but sometimes, out of excitement, these things happen. Sadly, we are now faced with this painful reality. As citizens, we are heartbroken, but we must avoid politicizing this tragedy. The ferry remains safe, and since it was installed, no one has drowned from it, unlike before, when the wooden canoe claimed many lives.”

As the community continues to mourn, search efforts are still underway to recover the body, keeping families and residents in anxious hope, though very emotional.
