Sanniquellie, Nimba, Liberia: In a significant step toward improving regional connectivity and unlocking economic potential, the Sanniquellie Airstrip is poised for a major transformation as ground was broken on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, for a six-month runway renovation project.

The groundbreaking ceremony was led by Samaritan’s Purse International Relief in collaboration with the Nimba County Administration and the Government of Liberia.

The project, fully funded by Samaritan’s Purse International Relief, comes with an estimated investment of USD 30,000 and aims to restore the airstrip to a functional state capable of supporting future regional air traffic, creating new avenues for economic activity, trade, and emergency health access in northern Liberia.

Speaking at the ceremony, Madam Kou Meapeh Gono, a prominent local leader, hailed the initiative as a “timely and brilliant intervention” that will bring pride and progress to the people of Nimba County and Liberia at large. She underscored the historical significance of the airstrip and called on the people of Sanniquellie, through City Mayor Z. Zuamien Zenor and Commissioner Mary Nyan Gonlepa, to take ownership of the facility’s upkeep.

Also speaking at the event, Mr. Egon Nuiah, Deputy Managing Director for Operations at the Liberia Airport Authority, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to working closely with the county administration and Samaritan’s Purse to ensure the airstrip meets acceptable aviation standards.

Once completed, the rehabilitated Sanniquellie Airstrip is expected to stimulate local commerce, attract humanitarian and private sector investment, and improve access to services, ultimately supporting long-term development in Nimba County.
