Karluway, Maryland – September 8, 2024 – In a devastating incident on Sunday, September 8, a 55-year-old cyclist, David Flomo, tragically lost his life in a motorbike accident involving a precarious bridge between Wutuken and Pomuken Towns. Flomo, who was known for his daily transportation of goods by bike, was carrying a load of rubber latex when the accident occurred.

Accident Details

Flomo was traversing a major stick-made bridge that crosses a creek on the road connecting Pomuken and Wutuken. As he navigated the bridge with his bike heavily loaded, the structure gave way, causing him to fall into the creek below along with his bike and cargo. The weight of the rubber latex and the bike reportedly contributed to the severity of the incident.

Emergency responders, including a team of health practitioners led by Police CID Jimmy T. Kaydor, arrived at the scene promptly. Despite their efforts, Flomo was pronounced dead upon their arrival. The body was subsequently examined by a 15-man coroner jury, which concluded that there was no foul play involved in the tragic accident. The remains were then released to his family for burial.

Calls for Safety and Infrastructure Improvements

In the wake of the accident, Detective Jimmy T. Kaydor of the Pleebo Police CID/CSD emphasized the urgent need for enhanced safety measures for cyclists and drivers.

“You can’t have this kind of load behind you and cross a stick bridge like that. We are calling on all cyclists and drivers to adhere to safety measures because, ultimately, your life comes first,” Kaydor stated.

The incident has sparked concern within the communities of Pomuken and Wutuken, highlighting the precarious state of infrastructure in the region. Moses Davis, Youth President of Wutuken Township, expressed alarm over the state of the local roads and bridges.

“This tragic event has made us afraid for our safety. We urgently need government officials and humanitarian organizations to assist in constructing safer, more reliable bridges along our roads,” Davis urged.

Broader Implications

Reports indicate that many rural towns in Maryland’s Electoral District 3, including those in Karluway, are plagued with roads and bridges constructed primarily from sticks. This raises significant concerns about the safety and durability of infrastructure in these areas.

The tragic death of David Flomo serves as a stark reminder of the pressing need for infrastructure improvements and stricter safety regulations to prevent similar accidents in the future. Humanitarian institutions and government officials are now urged to act swiftly to address these critical issues and enhance the safety of transportation routes in Maryland County.
